Ace Of Base - Dont Turn Around
Why can't I stop watching Ace of Base videos? Is it to late to join your band?

Marcos Valle - "Bicicleta" (1984)
This video has me allllll over it baby. Awesome Brazilian music from the 80s, poppy and funky with some soul. It has a lot of the same influences as italo-disco but a totally different direction. I think I have a new music genre to explore.
Speaking of 80s and italo, lately I have been highly enjoying 'Death in June Mix' by Arawa.fm's Tommyboy. I love him but I don't know his real name. I don't think italo related love is meant to be any other kind of way. Enjoy.

Matzak, some Ellen Allien and Soundcloud
Many many months ago I discovered Matzak's Life Beginnings on the internet somewhere. I knew it was trancey minimal, which I already love as a genre, but I didn't know anything, and still don't really, about the artist because I am dependent on wikipedia for these sorts of information. He still doesn't have an entry (obscure points +5 if that is important to you). The album itself is truly excellent for it you just want to chill out, either out in the sun reading a book, while driving, or to keep you in a good mood when you are stuck at your crappy summer job greeting bitchy customers. I enjoy it because it is very hypnotic and has its darker moments, but it has so much brightness that at the end you miss having it playing. You can play it on repeat but it keeps sounding fresh. I think I've had this CD since last fall now that I think about it, but it feels like I should have only gotten it in February or something. If you like Air, you should definitely check this out, as should you if you like other chill music genres like reggae or classical. If you already like dancey electro, then you should calm down for a bit and listen to some trance, at least while hung over.
I discovered Matzak has a bunch of free tracks available on the site Soundcloud, which all seem to be more dancey and intense than those on his album. I'm currently enjoying the track 'Who Killed Punky Brewster.' Obviously I couldn't resist such a great name. I think the track needs a minute to get really good, but I dig the funky groove that starts happening. However, the track African Roots, reminds me of Ellen Allien's SOOL album too much for me to enjoy it, although there are some extra africany drum rhythms added in. I think Lion's Charge, and Madison-Loading-Matzak Rework sound much more original and interesting.
Speaking of Ellen, found a sick track of her's on Soundcloud:
But regardless of if Matzak is your bag, Soundcloud is a really interesting site where artists can post tracks and people can download them. What's really cool, too, is that you can comment so that it will show up when a certain part of the song plays and give much more helpful and specific feedback. The format is much much cleaner than Myspace for example, and doesn't mess up my computer. It seems like it is mostly being used for electro tracks right now, but I don't see why it wouldn't spread to other kinds of music in the future. Read More......

OMG nerdgasm
Mike Simonetti just posted links to two blogs that have copious demos and old tracks from Glass Candy and the Chromatics. I posted a Glass Candy video a while back, I'm pretty sure, and the Chromatics also have Mike Simonetti on the beats but a different singer. Both are amazing, and the quantity of this stuff is making me really excited. It's free and aproved by the artist! And look at the album art! OMG OMG OMG
And for anyone interested in something non-music related, lately I've been posting mostly in my new blog with my friend Suz in our blog Husband Material. It's our womanly take on Boner Party. Read More......

Today's music wandering
Thought I'd share some recent discoveries:
For the Italo-disco lover, I just discovered a listing of goldmine italo-disco music videos. The DMP site is really geared to the mixes, which I gather are composed of all old disco rarities. I haven't listened to any, but sounds fun.
That site also led me to Euro-flash, which has a fun Unofficial Italo Disco History as well as info on obscure italo schtuff. I'll read it when I'm attempting not to procrastinate on my thesis.
So I found these through a DMP add on Dream Chimney, which is a random little site with dream postings, and youtube music videos. The site reads:
It also has tracks of the day, all of which seem to be pretty awesome. Today's included some Christian prog rock, a grimy Funkadelic melody, and this little number:
(German acidtrip spacerock)
Finally the site that really started it all is my new blogcrush Arawa.fm . It's a lovely mixture of weird things, especially disco or electro related, things on VHS and made in the eighties, i.e. pretty much everything that is closest to my soul. I'm following the bloggers--geordi_laforge and seandonson--on Twitter (as well as MikeSimonetti from Class Candy and the Italians Do It Better label). Kindof makes me feel super cool. By the way their posts are way better than Diplo's, who posts inane things way too frequently.
Speaking of Italians Do it Better, twitter let me know about the new release Twisted Wires. Click for a taste. Read More......

I can't believe I haven't posted about this yet
A while ago I mentioned beginning a now steadily growing VHS collection. As the only one of my friends with a VHS collection I now have the benefit of being on the receiving end of many treasures they spot for me in the bottom of their family closets and library sales. Such highlights include Sherlock Undercover Dog, Mission: Impossible, 2 copies of Simply Irresistible with Sarah Michelle Gellar, 2010: the year we make contact aka the sequel to 2001: Space Odyssey.
The main point of this story is that many many months ago I slipped in my tape of Sleeping Beauty, and may have made one of the greatest discoveries of my life. There was a music video.
If you have good speakers, this will seriously blow your mind. You may want to be intoxicated to fully appreciate the experience as well. It gets really good around 2:10 with an epic ninties-era club breakdown. I won't tell you how many times I've watched this. Read More......

Players, Philly venues
Since I haven't been updating often (thanks to the deluge of work that is senior year), I'll share my recent go to places for music. First off, I just discovered RVNG (Revenge without the e's), which has a monthly playlist of weird mostly electro stuff. It's good, I'm enjoying it right now. Here's the tracklist:
RVNG MARCH 2009 PLAYLIST
1. Popol Vuh - Through Pains To Heaven
2. Sebastian Tellier - Kilometer (Aeroplane 'Italo 84' Remix)
3. Kris Menace - Scaler
4. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Everything With you
5. Zombie Nation - Bass Kaput
6. Black Dice - Earnings Plus Interest
7. Spiders On Phasing - Studio Outtake 8
8. Reinaldo And The Loaf - A Critical Dance
9. The Jellies - Jive Baby On A Saturday Night
10. Sun Araw - Harken Sawshine
11. Idol Fodder - Death And The Maiden
12. The Reflections - Oh Baby, Look Out (It's The New Dance)
13. Rick Potts - Ode To Archaeopterx
14. Television Personalities - Makin' Time
15. The Zombies - Girl Help Me
16. Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Heart's Arms
Apparently, I was clueless about their Making Time parties which happen often in Philly, and they also organize New York shows (like one with Ellen Allien, which really pisses me off. Why doesn't she come to Philly??). I definitely plan to keep an eye out for the next one.
I saw The Pains of Being Pure at Heart at Kung Fu Necktie. They have a shoe-gazey, 90s sound that I love because anything remotely nineties fills me with nostalgic joy. Kung Fu Necktie is cool, filled with bearded twenty-somethings in plaid shirts. Very low female to male ratio, which is always an interesting contrast to my usual women's college environment. I don't know what it's called, since I specifically asked for 'your cheapest draft beer' but its $3.50 and good. Recommended.
Also, while I've been finding out about various Philly parties, I added DIY, Philly! as a myspace friend to get updates about DIY shows (I'm poor and artsy), and there is actually a great player on there, too. I presume all local Philly bands as well. I've definitely waited a while to try to get into the Philly scene, I'm so lazy, but I finally have motivation as I plan to come back in the fall and live here for real. Maybe this will be something I actually update regularly about. Read More......

Cold Wave: John Foxx and Gary Numan
"He's a Liquid"
Every time I decide I need to post, I think, "huh, maybe I should post something that normal people could listen to and appreciate, rather than the totally random and weird music video I seem to usually post." And then I find things like this. Cold Wave. Well I think it's cool. Just click the link because this particular video is against embedding, but its the best quality version.
"Underpass"
In an interview I saw somewhere in which I could barely hear anything, one thing I did hear John Foxx say was that there is something uncomfortable about his music, it doesn't quite fit. And that's what makes it awesome. Get it?
Gary Numan "I Die You Die"
This is a bit catchier, he has more hand claps. Influenced by John Foxx. Also weird.
I should sleep. Read More......
