Players, Philly venues

Since I haven't been updating often (thanks to the deluge of work that is senior year), I'll share my recent go to places for music. First off, I just discovered RVNG (Revenge without the e's), which has a monthly playlist of weird mostly electro stuff. It's good, I'm enjoying it right now. Here's the tracklist:

RVNG MARCH 2009 PLAYLIST

1. Popol Vuh - Through Pains To Heaven
2. Sebastian Tellier - Kilometer (Aeroplane 'Italo 84' Remix)
3. Kris Menace - Scaler

5. Zombie Nation - Bass Kaput
6. Black Dice - Earnings Plus Interest
7. Spiders On Phasing - Studio Outtake 8
8. Reinaldo And The Loaf - A Critical Dance
9. The Jellies - Jive Baby On A Saturday Night
10. Sun Araw - Harken Sawshine
11. Idol Fodder - Death And The Maiden
12. The Reflections - Oh Baby, Look Out (It's The New Dance)
13. Rick Potts - Ode To Archaeopterx
14. Television Personalities - Makin' Time
15. The Zombies - Girl Help Me
16. Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Heart's Arms

Apparently, I was clueless about their Making Time parties which happen often in Philly, and they also organize New York shows (like one with Ellen Allien, which really pisses me off. Why doesn't she come to Philly??). I definitely plan to keep an eye out for the next one.

I saw The Pains of Being Pure at Heart at Kung Fu Necktie. They have a shoe-gazey, 90s sound that I love because anything remotely nineties fills me with nostalgic joy. Kung Fu Necktie is cool, filled with bearded twenty-somethings in plaid shirts. Very low female to male ratio, which is always an interesting contrast to my usual women's college environment. I don't know what it's called, since I specifically asked for 'your cheapest draft beer' but its $3.50 and good. Recommended.

Also, while I've been finding out about various Philly parties, I added DIY, Philly! as a myspace friend to get updates about DIY shows (I'm poor and artsy), and there is actually a great player on there, too. I presume all local Philly bands as well. I've definitely waited a while to try to get into the Philly scene, I'm so lazy, but I finally have motivation as I plan to come back in the fall and live here for real. Maybe this will be something I actually update regularly about.
